Are Democratic Leaders Doing Enough?

Let me start by saying that I am f*** pissed off. Trump has been in office for nearly a full week and boy what a week it has been. He has attempted to do some outlandish shit, even more than I think any of us could have predicted. But that is not what I am pissed off about. I am infuriated by the lack of Democratic opposition and fight. What the hell are Democrats doing?

While there is an aspiring dictator in the White House and he is doing everything he possibly can to turn our democracy into his personal authoritarian regime, Democrat are sending out irrelevant and useless tweets about the cost of eggs and gas. While Trump is nominating clearly unqualified sexual assault perpetrators to top level government positions, Democrats are going through the motions at the confirmation hearing without putting up a significant fight. Some are even voting for their confirmation. So, I ask again what the hell are Democrats doing?

The elected Democrats that we, the people, have entrusted to work in our best interests are failing us. As Trump is trying to fill the government with all his sycophantic “yes” people, Democrats have one role, be the opposition. Democrats should be in front of every camera loudly and in one voice expressing their outrage. They need to use every media outlet to tell all people, even those who voted for Trump what is going on and exactly what is being done to our democracy, our institutions, and the rule of law.

It is time that the Democrats take a page out of the Republican playbook. Play on people fears of the future and what four years of Trump will do to this country. Stop trying to play nice by abiding by rules and norms because they no longer exist. As I have said before, there is no more “high road.” It is time to get in the mud and fight. If they don’t, soon, I fear we will have nothing left to fight for.

I will acknowledged that we are starting to see some more fight from the Democrats. Following a slew of executive order from Trump they recently held an emergency meeting and vowed to make their opposition “a street fight.” Democratic Senators also boycotted the confirmation vote for Russ Vought as the head of the Office of Management and Budget. Additionally, it was announced that a congressional task force is being established to counter Project 2025. While these are all great first steps and I applaud them and I pray for their success, they need to go further and be more extreme. I question why were these steps not taken the second that everyone knew that Trump won the election back in November?

I want to see Democrats taking the fight to the Right. I want to see more of them, like Gavin Newsome and Pete Buttigieg, go on FOX news and express their outrage directly to the Trumpian viewers. I want to see the same level of outrage that we are currently seeing from citizens of foreign nations. Led by their political leaders, citizens in Mexico, Panama, Belgium, Germany, Italy, Australia, and the United Kingdom have all held very large marches in protest of Trump. It is true that there have also been several protest marches in the U.S., what is missing are the Democratic leaders. They all need to participate and march with the people.

I am infuriated by the passivity of the Democrats in Washington who go on friendly left leaning media outlets to “voice their concern” about Project 2025, the removal of government watchdogs, the ban of health information, the dismantling of FEMA, or the immigration raids that are taking place. Concern is not enough and speaking to a friendly audience who already agrees with you is not getting to word out or fighting against it. Where is the outrage, the disgust, the protest, and the vitriol that must reach those who are not friendly. What are they doing to reach them?

Where are the protests and boycotts? Why are they even attending the confirmation hearings and tacitly asking mundane questions? They must know that the individual is going to get confirmed with or without Democrats asking mediocre questions at their confirmation hearing, so why not send a strong message and boycott the hearings and get in front of a camera on the step of the capitol and tell the American people why? They could still vote in opposition when it comes to the floor. Every Democrat should be of one voice and action demonstrating to the American people that what is happening is wrong and that they will no longer “go along to get along.”

Democrats must prey on those Republican voters who, although they voted for Trump, did not vote for the shitshow that is happening now. No one voted for attacking Mexico, buying Greenland, or annexing Canada. No one voted for Elon Musk and fellow billionaires to set policy and to intervene in government affairs. No one voted for abolishing parts of the Constitution or arresting American citizens, veterans, or native Americans in immigration raids. Democrats must prioritize standing up for the American people and convince Republicans to join the opposition, before it is too late.

At this time, the sole purpose of the Democrats existence is to be crystal clear that they oppose everything that Trump is trying to do, to be a pain in the ass, and to obstruct the process. It is outrageous that they are not doing this already and Republicans are taking advantage of it. Their nominations are being confirmed, people are being purged from our institutions, and people are being targeted and deported simply because of their national origin. Where is the opposition? Who is loudly getting in the way? Who is standing up against this? Democrats cannot simply give up.

Trump is and always has been a bully and now he has the power to become a dictator. Trump is exploiting Democrats, taking advantage of their weaknesses, and moving forward with is agenda because there does not seem to be much opposition. There has never been a time in the history of this great nation when it has been more important for Democrats to take a stand, resist, and obstruct everything. I am pissed because it is not already happening, Democrats need to be the adult in the room and slap (metaphorically of course) the Republican children when they get out of line.

The Democrats in both the House and Senate need to stand up, put their big boy pants on and act. They need to stand up for us and make sure that our health and safety is always protected. They need fight to make sure that our institutions are protected and that while Trump removes all aspects of the system of checks and balances, Democrats need to be the check on him that will not go away and will not yield. In response to every corrupt and illegal action that Trump takes, Democrats need to make such a loud and unabashedly boisterous fuss that all media outlets have no choice but to cover and broadcast it.

There are currently 215 Democrats in the House and 45 in the Senate and Republicans have very slim majorities. Yet, I only see a handful of these Democratic representatives speaking out publicly. Every one of them should be in front of a camera every day. Currently, their sole purpose is to persuade just a small handful of Republicans to vote against what Trump is doing. All Democrats need to flood social media with their outrage, let people know what is going on, and let them know the consequences that will occur. For the life of me I cannot comprehend why this is not already happening and it pisses me off.

The bottom line is this. Democrats need to take off the gloves in every way imaginable. The Trump administration is a five-alarm fire, and you cannot put out the flames with a squirt gun, you need to throw everything you have at it to put it down. Nothing less than everything we have is acceptable. Our Democratic leadership must do everything in their power to make things hard for Trump and the Republicans. Historically when things are hard and there is significant opposition, Republicans tend to back away from the fight, so Democrats must make everything extremely hard.

I started my activism by sending letters and emails to Republicans, trying to do what our Democratic leaders should be doing. Now I am also including all Democrats on my mailing lists. We are far past time for them to stand up and speak out. They need to be a thorn in Trump’s side, be annoying, and obstruct everything that Trump and his Republicans are trying to destroy. Now is not a time for useless tweets or speeches on friendly media networks, it is time for action. It is time for our Democrat leaders to make some “good trouble” and never back down from this fight. It is time to pull up your britches and fight for our rights and freedoms, but most importantly for our democracy. History will judge them by their actions but also by their inaction and I say if we are going to lose our Democracy, at least go down swinging.

I am a true-blue Democrat and always will be, but I have to acknowledge that I have never been more disappointed with the current Democratic leadership than I am at this moment. I feel that many are timid and are not willing to start a fight. Democrats need to recognize that we represent the majority in this country, and they must fight fiercely for us. Simply put, their so-called opposition to this tyrant is not sufficient, effective, or meaningful. My biggest fear is that through their inaction we are going to lose everything. Please GOD, I hope I am wrong.
